Big Papa Hundo Island

Big Papa Hundo Island is a Humboldt county local environmental initiative and philosophical concept championed by activist Jack Grace (Bigpapahundo) in Humboldt County, California. The "island" is primarily an idea for a "Grateful Living Intentional Community" centered around:

  • Environmental Cleanup: A project focused on cleaning up pollution, specifically along the banks and in the waters of the Eel River.
  • Activism: Using the idea as a platform to advocate for cannabis education and community service.
  • Communal Living Principles: Embracing principles inspired by counterculture figures like Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm commune, emphasizing grateful living, humanitarianism, and local engagement.
  • Protest Art/Performance: The concept also functions as a form of protest art, using a catchy, slightly absurd name to draw attention to local issues and his unique brand of activism.

The name "Big Papa Hundo Island" serves as a focal point for his local efforts, it is also his base of living when inhabitable alongside Luna and Tickle the bears. The physical location is a mile long sand formation that he protects creating large scale art that is intentionally spontaneous positive yet temporary.

Big Papa Hundo Island

The "Big Papa Hundo Island" concept is a form of symbolic protest and a community-building initiative led by Jack Grace, the "Humboldt Lorax Clown". It is not a literal, legally sovereign island, but rather a creative and performative approach to raising awareness and inspiring action on environmental issues, particularly around the Eel River in Humboldt County. Key aspects of the concept include:

  • Environmental Stewardship: The core goal is to promote the cleanup and health of the Eel River, which has suffered from pollution, sediment erosion, and water diversion, partly due to unregulated "Green Rush" cannabis farming practices. Grace uses the "island" as a metaphor for a self-sustaining community committed to "best management practices and a stewardship ethic."
  • "Grateful Living Intentional Community": The "island" represents a philosophy and a decentralized community of like-minded individuals dedicated to humanitarian causes, environmental responsibility, and living by the motto "Love All, Serve All" (inspired by Wavy Gravy).
  • Protest Art and Education: By presenting the idea of a "sovereign" community, Grace draws attention to environmental neglect and sparks conversations about legal jurisdictions, environmental regulations, and community responsibility. The fictional nature allows for a unique way to engage the public and media on serious issues without the immediate legal hurdles of a physical claim.
  • Actionable Initiatives: While the "island" itself is symbolic, it aims to inspire real-world actions, such as participating in river cleanups, adopting sustainable practices in cannabis cultivation, and advocating for the protection of the Eel River watershed and its salmon habitats.

In essence, "Big Papa Hundo Island" serves as a rallying point for environmental activism, using performance art and community engagement to address pressing ecological concerns in the region.

Big Papa Hundo Island

"Big Papa Hundo Island" is an ephemeral sandbar located in the Eel River in rural Humboldt County, California. It is not a permanent, solid landmass. Key details about the island:

  • Ephemeral Nature: The sandbar forms during the dry season when river flows are low and is washed away annually during winter rains and high water flows. This temporary existence is central to Big Papa Hundo's artistic philosophy.
  • Artistic Canvas: He uses the island as a temporary studio and canvas for environmental art. He builds installations using natural materials (driftwood, river rocks) and collected trash found along the riverbanks.
  • Philosophy: The impermanence of the art highlights themes of the human impact on nature, the transient nature of existence, and the importance of engaging with the present moment. He views these installations as a metaphor for life and the need to "put your good where it will do the most."
