"Big Papa Hundo" (Jack Grace) functions as a modern counterculture figure through his unique blend of activism, humanitarian work, and public persona, inspired heavily by the established icon Wavy Gravy. He can be considered a modern counterculture figure due to several key factors:

  • Challenging Norms through Cannabis Advocacy: Grace openly challenges conventional views on medicine by attributing his survival from a serious illness to cannabis oil (RSO) and advocating for its legalization and acceptance as a valid treatment. This aligns with countercultural challenges to mainstream healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.
  • "Disciple of Gravy" Persona: By adopting the philosophy of Wavy Gravy, he embodies a legacy of using humor, non-violence ("Please Force"), and compassion ("seva") to promote social change. This approach is distinctly countercultural in its rejection of traditional, often confrontational, political activism styles.
  • Grassroots Environmentalism: His local efforts to clean up the Eel River and promote environmental stewardship are bottom-up, community-focused initiatives rather than top-down political campaigns. This focus on local action and sustainable living is a hallmark of many modern counterculture movements.
  • Blended Identity: He blends a serious professional life (as a fire safety expert) with a whimsical, costumed public persona (the "Humboldt Lorax Clown"), blurring the lines between work, life, and activism in a way that is inherent to counterculture lifestyles.

His work is less about global fame and more about creating real, positive change within his local community of Humboldt County, serving as a powerful, localized example of modern countercultural values in action."Big Papa Hundo" is the online handle and public persona of an individual named Jack Grace, an activist, educator, and entertainer based in Humboldt County, California. Wavy Gravy, known as a clown, activist, and "flower geezer," advocates for peace, love, and community action through humor and compassion. Key Principles of the "Disciple of Gravy" Philosophy:

  • Compassion in Action: The core of the philosophy is service to humanity, or "seva," a Sanskrit word that is the name of Wavy Gravy's international health organization. This means turning empathy into tangible help, such as the foundation's work restoring sight to millions worldwide.
  • Humor and Joy as Tools: Laughter is seen as a crucial coping mechanism. Wavy Gravy often says, "If you don't have a sense of humor, it just isn't funny anymore," and believes joy can be a powerful force for social change and resilience.
  • Community and Interconnectedness: The philosophy emphasizes the interconnectedness of all people and the importance of living in a supportive community. Wavy Gravy's work with the Hog Farm commune and Camp Winnarainbow exemplifies this by creating spaces for people to live together and support one another.
  • Putting Your "Good" to Work: A guiding motto, which Wavy Gravy attributes to Ken Kesey, is: "Always put your good where it'll do the most". This encourages people to focus their positive energy and actions on initiatives that will have the greatest impact.
  • Peaceful Activism: Wavy Gravy's methods, such as using a "Please Force" instead of police at Woodstock and dressing as a clown to de-escalate confrontations, emphasize non-violent, creative solutions to conflict and social issues.

By calling himself a "Disciple of Gravy," Big Papa Hundo is aligning his local activism, health advocacy, and community engagement with this broader, optimistic, and compassionate counterculture legacy.Would you like to know more about the SEVA Foundation's sight-restoration work or the Camp Winnarainbow performing arts camp for kids? • Time Management & Boundaries: Like many working professionals, Grace likely employs strict time management, scheduling dedicated time for both his business operations and his activist engagements. His activism often seems to involve "pop-up" events and community work, which may offer more flexibility than a rigid corporate schedule.
  • Distinct Personas: He maintains two largely separate identities. His work in the fire safety industry is highly professional and technical (he is a former president of the International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association (IKECA)), while his "Big Papa Hundo" persona is the colorful, public-facing, countercultural character. This separation helps prevent conflicts between the established, safety-regulated industry and his more radical advocacy for cannabis.
  • Shared Core Value: While the topics are different, there is a common thread of safety and well-being in both roles. In his professional life, he is focused on fire and life safety in kitchens. In his activism, he advocates for the safety and well-being of his community members through medical cannabis access and a clean environment. This underlying value may make it easier for him to transition between roles.
  • Local Focus: His activism is centered on his local area of Humboldt County. This contained geographic scope allows him to have a significant impact without requiring constant, widespread travel that might interfere with his professional commitments.

Key Areas of Fire Safety Expertise

  • NFPA 96 Compliance: He is an expert in the NFPA 96 standard, which provides comprehensive fire safety requirements for the design, installation, operation, inspection, and maintenance of commercial cooking equipment. Compliance with this standard is essential for fire prevention.
  • Regular Maintenance: His work emphasizes the critical importance of regular and thorough cleaning of kitchen exhaust systems to "bare metal" to prevent hazardous buildup. The frequency of cleaning depends on the cooking volume, with high-volume operations requiring monthly attention.
  • Industry Standards: As a former president of the International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association (IKECA), Grace has helped develop industry standards (like ANSI/IKECA C10) that define acceptable cleaning methodologies and post-cleaning cleanliness levels.
  • Class K Fires: He is an expert in managing fires involving cooking oils and animal fats, which are classified as Class K fires. Commercial kitchens are required by fire codes to have specific Class K fire extinguishers on hand to properly manage these types of fires.

His professional dedication to fire safety and risk mitigation showcases a serious commitment to community well-being that complements his public persona and activism.

Get swept up in the TORNADO OF TALENT

The "Humboldt Lorax Clown" is a specific iteration of Jack Grace's "Big Papa Hundo" persona, used primarily to emphasize his role as an environmentalist and community protector within Humboldt County, California. The name is a symbolic mashup:

  • Humboldt: Refers to Humboldt County, California, his base of operations, known for its natural beauty and counterculture history.
  • Lorax: A direct reference to the classic Dr. Seuss character who "speaks for the trees" and warns against environmental destruction. By adopting this image, Grace positions himself as a local guardian of the natural surroundings.
  • Clown: Reflects his use of humor, playful performance, and the countercultural "clown philosophy" inherited from Wavy Gravy. It allows him to engage people in serious issues in a lighthearted, approachable manner.

This persona is specifically deployed when he is engaged in hands-on environmental projects, such as his efforts to clean up the Eel River and advocate for the preservation of local natural resources. It is a visual representation of his motto to "put his good where it'll do the most" for the local ecosystem.

New kicks in 26 TOUR

Get swept up in the TORNADO OF TALENT

Jack Grace came up with the "Humboldt Lorax Clown" persona by combining specific cultural and local references that are meaningful to his advocacy work:

  • Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax": He adopted the "Lorax" image because the character famously "speaks for the trees" and the environment against industrial harm. This provides a clear, universally understood metaphor for his own local environmental activism, particularly his efforts to clean up the Eel River and protect Humboldt County's natural beauty.
  • Humboldt County: The "Humboldt" part of the name grounds his persona in his specific geographic location, an area known for its unique ecosystem (redwood forests) and strong history of environmental awareness and counterculture.
  • Wavy Gravy's Influence ("Clown"): The "Clown" element stems directly from the philosophy of his mentor, Wavy Gravy (Hugh Romney), a famous counterculture figure, activist, and self-described "flower geezer" and clown. Wavy Gravy believes in using humor, playfulness, and non-aggressive methods—what he calls the "Please Force"—to effect social change.

Grace blended these elements to create a powerful, approachable, and highly symbolic character that clearly communicates his mission: a local guardian using joy and non-conformity to advocate for nature.

He employs absurdity in the following ways:

  • Juxtaposing Roles: The inherent absurdity of his persona lies in the contrast between his real-life professional background as a certified fire safety expert and his counterculture persona as the "Humboldt Lorax Clown" and cannabis activist. This juxtaposition of the highly technical, ordered world of fire safety and the free-spirited, often chaotic world of activism is a source of humor and surprise.
  • Surreal Imagery and Titles: He uses unusual, almost nonsensical language and titles, such as "Disciple of Gravy" and "Humboldt Lorax Clown," which create a surreal and unexpected mental image. This wordplay subverts logical expectations and draws attention.
  • Highlighting Inconsistencies: He uses absurd situations or examples in his social commentary to illustrate points about the world. By taking a situation to an illogical or nonsensical extreme, he can make the original point stand out, a method that can be seen as "illustrating the absurd with absurdity". For example, he might use a casual, "chill" delivery when discussing the serious, illogical nature of certain laws or societal rules.
  • Embracing the Unexpected: Much like the absurdist comedy genre, he embraces the irrational and the bizarre to generate amusement. His public "Still ALIVE in '25 TOUR" pop-up activism events, with their emphasis on peace, love, and "gravy," juxtapose a serious purpose (activism) with a lighthearted, almost nonsensical presentation.
